Kian had his heart catheterization today. He did really well. The only issue was his access, so it took a little longer to "get in". But they were able to get the pictures they needed and measure the pressures they needed. The surgeon will take the information from the CT scan, bronchoscopy and heart cath to determine what he is going to do to help Kian and what method he is going to use.
We now know that Kian's new pulmonary artery that was created during his first surgery is putting pressure on the main bronchus of his lungs. This is making it difficult for Kian to expand his lungs fully. The surgeon will need to lift his pulmonary artery up to take that pressure off. Also, we now know that Kian has too much pulmonary blood flow. The shunt that was put in during surgery is a little too big for him. The reason for placing a bigger shunt was in hopes of putting off any further surgery for as long as possible. But Kian's body isn't handling it too well and will probably need a smaller shunt or at least a band around the one he has to downsize it. (Hope all this medical jargon isn't too much-just wanted to explain as much as possible) :)
We still do not know when Kian's next open heart surgery will be. It is projected for sometime this week but we don't have a set date. We are hoping to have a date on Monday. We'll keep you posted!
LOVE YOU KIAN!!!!!....nanna chichi and Jessica!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update - I think you do a great job of explaining what's going on in terms we can understand. We also have no doubt that Kian will overcome this hurdle, as he has done so many times already! We are praying that the surgery date will be set soon & that it will be a success. :) love & hugs!
